Viennese Dance Music, the Second Viennese School and their Milieu

Symposium – Concerts – Round-Table Discussion

Lecture Theatre of the Arnold Schönberg Centre, Vienna, 3 – 5 April 2008

The aim of the symposium and the subsequent round-table discussion is to intensify and in some respects to provide a necessary revision of our knowledge of the points of contact between the dance music of Vienna and the most important musical styles of the twentieth century. The focus will in particular be on the relationship between the composers of the Second Viennese School and dance music. The spectrum ranges from productive reception in the form of arrangements to melodic and rhythmic adaptations of familiar dance forms and motifs using the language and forms of twentieth-century music. Examples will be performed in concerts presented with a commentary or given in connection with workshops.
