VIENNA INSTITUTE FOR STRAUSS RESEARCH

The Vienna Institute for Strauss Research is a society which supports scholarly research projects in connection with the musicians of the Strauss family in Vienna and their contemporaries.

Vienna indicates that although Strauss research is today carried out at an international level, it remains a field which is essentially Viennese and so should and must remain firmly anchored in Vienna.

Institute means that we want to be an institution for Strauss research, but also that our goal is to institutionalise this research.

[…] for Strauss Research means that we want to concern ourselves with scholarly research into the lives and works of all members of the Viennese Strauss family and not restrict ourselves to Johann Strauss (I or II).

The Vienna Institute for Strauss Research is not in competition with any of the many Strauss societies – past, present or future! But it does provide a central point for research, and will publish only what is the result of scholarly research. For this the most important requirement is the meticulous investigation of sources and scholarly scrutiny. It is better for work to take a little longer, be published later and be accurate, rather than quicker, sooner and wrong.

MAIN PROJECTS

The main projects being undertaken by the Vienna Institute for Strauss Research are:

Strauss-Elementar-Verzeichnis (SEV), a thematic and bibliographic catalogue of the works of Johann Strauss II.

Strauss-Allianz-Verzeichnis (SAV), a thematic and bibliographic catalogue of the works of Johann Strauss I, Johann Strauss II, Josef Strauss, Eduard Strauss I and Johann Strauss III.

Doblingers Johann Strauss Gesamtausgabe (Doblinger’s Johann Strauss II Complete Works Edition) in cooperation with the Vienna Institute for Strauss Research. Scores and parts published by Doblinger, Vienna.

Since 2004 the Vienna Institute for Strauss Research has organised the annual Tanz-Signale (Dance Signals) symposium, a forum within which to present the results of research and to stimulate further necessary steps in research and interpretation in connection with the music of the Strauss family and their musical environment.
