    Biography

    Prof. Ehalt has taught at the University of Vienna for forty years. In addition has held many posts at other universities and institutions of higher education in Austria. At present he is a professor at the University of Vienna and the University of Applied Art in Vienna.

    His fields of research include the history of culture, science and art, as well as the history of everyday life and mentality in the modern period. His main expertise is in the fields of the concept of honour (manners, patterns of behaviour and politeness), symbols of power and status, and the social history of Vienna and the mentality of the Viennese from the time of Joseph II (1780-1790) to the present day.

    He is the author of a large number of publications (65 books and some 800 contributions to scholarly journals) and the editor of several series of studies. For details and titles go to the German page.

    Prof. Ehalt has also played a major role in sponsoring and organising scholarly projects and activities undertaken by many institutions, including the City of Vienna, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the universities of Economics, Agriculture and Medicine in Vienna.
